My Approach

As an teacher for almost twenty years, I believe in building a collaborative, meaningful relationship with my clients. By exploring a writer’s creativity in depth and through transformative conversations, I feel that I am able to meet writers exactly where they are, to seek,  to dance, to understand.

Although I am based in Atlantic Canada, I work with many of my clients on Zoom. If you are in Charlottetown, PEI or surrounding, I am happy to discuss in-person meetings.

My timezone: Atlantic Standard Time (AST)

“Writing can be a pretty desperate endeavor, because it is about some of our deepest needs: our need to be visible, to be heard, to be remembered. It’s also about our need to transform, to tell the truth as we see it, to come through the fire and make something beautiful of it. That’s the real miracle—the story rising from the ashes.”

— Annie Lamott

How an Editor Can Help

First, we dream it.

Have you always had an idea, but weren’t sure where to start? Explore the words behind the message and make a plan for success. Whether that’s your memoir, your nonfiction proposal or getting published — if you can dream it, you can do it.

Then, we build it.

Our creative lives often take rugged, unexpected sidebars into the wilds. Find your way back to your writing: one poem, one chapter, one essay at a time. As my kids often say to me, “Mommy, it’s your time to shine.”

Finally, we grow it.

You’ve spent your life generating the ideas. Maybe the manuscript is there. You just need someone to walk you through the final steps of tweaking that developmental edit — whether it’s a legacy project for your family, or a sales stream for your business.

FAQ

How long does it take to write a book?

Writing a book can take anywhere from weeks to months, to years. If you haven’t begun yet, you can probably expect that writing a nonfiction book can take anywhere between 12-24 months, which includes both research and writing time.

What is hybrid publishing?

Hybrid publishing is a publishing model that focuses on the best of both worlds: platforms for traditional publishing and full package custom publishing solutions.
Providing end to end support for nonfiction and picture book clients, Pownal Street Press partners with authors to create distinct books that serve their own markets and are also available retail. Hybrid publishing creates a bridge between the conventional publishing industry and the self-publishing industry, which can both be limiting platforms for first time authors. How much does hybrid publishing with Pownal Street Press cost?

Each project is totally unique. In determining a value for your book project, three things come into play: creative process, editorial work needed, art, and whether you intend to use our sales and distribution channels. Book a consultation with us and we begin with a manuscript evaluation.
